Love (the Netflix tv show)
Specifically, Season 2 Episode 3 and the first part of next
episode 4
What happened?
Love is a show about people in their early 30’s in LA. The two main characters have various
personality traits that cause problems.
They meet and the show has a ‘will they, won’t they’ become a couple and
be happy together.
Spoilers now:
At the end of season 1, they have just kissed and it’s a
cliff hanger of “will they get back together?”
In S02 E02, they hang a bunch and end the episode with them having sex. In the following episode, S02 E03, my
question was, “will Gus text Mikey?” Backstory, in Season 1, Gus and Mikey have
sex, then he doesn’t text her, she feels hurt, she brings it up, he says he
left that morning with a goodbye and that was his ‘daily contact.’ Mikey isn't thrilled with that answer. From that
point on, their relationship starts crumbling.
So, in S02 E03, Mikey checks her phone throughout the day
and Gus never texts. She drafts but
doesn’t send a text saying the sex was a mistake. She goes to bed seeming content. My expectation was some type of communication
follow up with her and Gus taking place the next episode. This show is very much sequential with many
episodes picking up directly where the last one left off. The past previous episode transitions did
that.
But, in S02 E04, it skips a day or more?! We have no
idea. It picks up like nothing is wrong. No scheduling drama. Gus just comes over during some following
evening.
I felt annoyed and a little insulted / disrespected. I expected some drama about Gus not texting after
sex or some drama about ‘will they won’t they?’ with scheduling their next date
/ hangout.
Here’s the why for my rating and my guess as to why this
show got canceled:
Why was the transition so bad? Why was it not consistent with past
episodes? Why do the characters change
how they act in the exact same situations?
This show, as many good TV shows, live and thrive off the
transitions between episodes. Like in
Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, or The Office, something happens at the end of
one episode and you want to know what will happen next. It’s called a cliff hanger. So you watch the
next episode and they answer what happens next.
Love generally does that: an episode has a cliff hanger, the
next episode picks up where it left off.
Why, in this big set up and tension from Mikey checking her phone
throughout the day and maybe texting Gus to end things… did nothing happen
without the next episode? The show just ignores all of the previous episodes as
soon as Gus comes to the door like nothing happened and it wasn’t a big deal.
Is the show entertaining? Yes. Do I laugh? Occasionally, it’s kind of a
drama. Is there a bunch of dumb shit?
Yea

P.S: In S02 E03, Truman (played by Bobby Lee) initially said
he was in an abusive relationship. Mikey
went to help him out by recovering stuff from Lee’s girlfriend’s apartment
while she was away. They get caught by
the girlfriend. The GF contradicts Lee’s
story.
What was up with Bobby Lee’s character? When was he lying or telling the truth? Why did they write it like that? What did that add to the show?
Just some unnecessary dumb shit. Get show your show together.
